Our traditional business was founded in 1932 in the Ruhrgebiet in Germany and was one of the first companies to develop and manufacture knee-protectors.
As a responsible distributor of professional knee-protection in mining applications, we helped to develop the Mining Standard DIN 23311 in cooperation with the Standard Committee Mining in 1953. Accordingly, optimal protection for the user as well the high quality standard for knee-protectors were set in stone for us.
Naturally the requirements of the new European standard DIN EN 14404 from the year 2005 have been accounted for, while preserving the old quality standards.
With the registered trademark WohltatTM, our products still stand for high quality and robust knee-protectors for a spectrum of different users, which has grown wider over the decades. They provide effective and durable protection for the knees in all types of kneeling work.
What began with the production of knee-protectors for mining applications, today represents a business which develops and produces knee-protectors for protection and safety in all manual labour.
Why kneepads? Safety for all occupation
Permanent pressure on the kees appears in a lot of professions. Roofers, tilers, gardeners, interior decorators, carpenters amd especially paviours and miners work mainly on their knees.This high spot pressure on the kneecaps causes many and diverse health damages. Arthrosis, synovial bursa inflammation and meniscus injuries. A knee joint arthrosis appears 13 times more often at a permanently strained knee than at a not permanently strained one. Frequently an ecomomical measurable loss of power and ability to work is the consequence. I.e. 85,4% occupational diseases of paviours are based on chronically synovial bursa inflammation caused by permanently pressure on the keecap (See: Bundesanstalt für Arbeitsschutz development report No. 248 1980). Due to illness loss of working strain the company financially and in its schedule. Knee pads decrease the risk of injuries by knee bruises, haematomas and abrasions considerable.On a long term basis they protect the workers knees from chronically diseases and signs of wear and tear that can cause incapacity to follow one´s profession. A perfectly manufactured and especially for each branche developed knee pad increase workers efficiency by allowing to work kneeling comfortable and painless.Workers often prefer to squat down than to work in a kneeling position. But from the medical point of view this is no alternative to a knee protection because of the overstretching of the ligament. The supporting surface and the soft embedding of the knee allocate the pressure regularly to knee cap and knee joint. This means a decreased risk of ruining the knee. To protect the workers knees is an important economical cause in your company.For decades it is the object of our efforts to develop the optimal knee pad for the different branches and strains.
… a few words about various qualities and materials!
Rubber knee-protectors are definitely tough and long-wearing because they are resistant to abrasion and aggressive chemicals.
Plastic knee-protectors made of thermo-plastic elastomers are an inexpensive alternative – they have similar properties to rubber but are not so long-wearing.
All models are padded with cellular rubber. This is a soft material which absorbs no moisture, remains permanently elastic and provides good pressure distribution.
PUR knee-protectors are moulded in one piece, they are very light and are mostly used in the DIY sector.
… a few words about the new standard!
For decades, the German mining standard DIN 23311 has, first and foremost, regulated dimensions and properties of knee-protectors in respect of continuous use and rate of wear.
With the implementation of the EU Directive 89/686/EWG, knee-protectors are, by definition, Personal Protection Equipment in Category II and have to undergo prototype testing.
The European standard for knee-protectors (DIN EN 14404) has only been in existence since February 2005 but is now the basis for the quality standard testing which is obligatory for all knee-protectors distributed in Europe.
Our knee-protectors are tested and certified in accordance with the regulations of DIN EN 14404.
Amongst others, the following points are tested in the complex certification procedure:
- Pressure distribution, measured using a mechanical test-knee
- Impact resistance
- Penetration resistance
- Elasticity and width of straps
